Vintage, survivor 409 Chevy dragster, brought back to street legal. Pictured
in a 1981 issue of "Super Chevy" magazine. Built in 1962 as a
(small block) V8 Impala with automatic transmission. Sold by the original owner
in 1970 for $250, to a Midwest drag racer with 22,000
miles on it. Car raced throughout the Midwest
until the mid 1980s, with various 409 & 427 engines and fuel systems.
A 1978 time slip from the famous Union Grove Dragway documents the car running
an 11.6, presumably with a 427 at that time. The current engine was the last
engine raced. It is a 1964 T04I3QG code 409, with original large port
(3814690 code) 425 HP factory heads, and factory dual quad manifold with a pair
of new 650cfm Edelbrock carbs, with new linkage. The engine is extremely
strong. Teardown and inspection revealed no damage of any sort, no wear
to speak of, and what appears to be standard bore, a fairly wild Crower cam,
forged steel crank, and performance pistons. New pushrods and a new oil pump
were installed. This engine always maintains strong oil pressure.
Transmission is the original Rockcrusher Muncie 4 speed, rebuilt, with the
original Hurst shifter and T
grip. This car arrived in Florida
in October of 2005, in a somewhat neglected condition. It has been extensively
rebuilt, and made (Florida)
street legal. The goal was to retain the car as original as possible,
both in paint/appearance and, where practical, with the original equipment, but
upgraded for street reliability. The 1970 paint job, now a"20 footer"
is very similar in color to the original factory color, and the extensive 5
color pin striping is completely original to its racing days. The race
paint shows the wear of nearly 40 years, but is quite attractive overall. The
car has it's original fiberglass front fenders and front bumper.
Mechanical upgrades: All new cooling system with custom made four core aluminum
radiator, duplex electric cooling fans, and stainless overflow tube. New MSD
distributor, 6A ignition box, 8200 Blaster coil, plug wires and ignition
switch.. All new fuel system, with fuel cell in the trunk, a Holley 12-175
electric pump, new regulator, in line filter, and new large capacity fuel
lines. All new springs, shocks, new air suspension bags in the rear,
new high performance clutch, pressure plate, and the original (Lakewood?)
racing scattershield, with inspection hatch. The rear axle housing was removed,
inspected, powder coated, and reinstalled with new U joints, and drive shaft
carrier/bearing assembly. Brakes are stock configuration, but are rebuilt
and with all new brake lines/hoses and wheel cylinders. All engine
accessories are new; alternator, water pump (rebuilt original), hoses, belt,
and motor mounts. Original vintage racing headers were powder coated in
satin silver. Rearend is a new 4:11
Posi unit. 100% of the car's mechanical systems were taken apart,
inspected, and rebuilt or replaced as necessary. Original dash gauges are
not functional. Instead, a new vintage looking gauge cluster by Autometer
displays oil, temp, and voltage in a panel affixed to the dash. An
original 60's vintage Sun tach is mounted on top of the dash. It has been
calibrated, and configured to work with the MSD ignition system, and functions
flawlessly.
New Mickey Thompson Sportsman tires are on the front, with a serviceable pair
of Hoosier tires on the rear. I also have the original pair of vintage
M&H slicks that this car raced on, mounted on a pair of vintage 8 inch wide
'station wagon' rims, as was the custom of the era. Remarkably, these
slicks still hold air, and I occasionally mount them for display at a car show.
I also have the original aluminum racing front wheels. The engine
compartment has been cleaned and painted/detailed.
The car had suffered some, but not extensive, rust, in the rockers, floor, etc.
etc, rust. I had 99% all of the rust professionally cut out, with new
metal welded in place. In the passenger compartment, the floor pans did not
require replacement, as only the floor braces and the areas over them were significantly
rusted. I had all of the floor braces cut out, with all new braces, and crafted
floor panel replacements installed. There are a few SMALL holes where a
fiberglass patch was applied. I also had the inner rocker panels replaced, on
both sides. The cockpit floor was extensively cleaned, and coated with
POR 15. The outer rocker panels, doors, and jams are solid. The car now
has no rust except for two areas: The first is the UNDERSIDE of the rear
quarter panels. It is relatively minor, and is not visible unless viewed
from under the car. I opted to leave it as is for the time being, because
I want the appearance of the car exactly as it was in its racing days.
The other minor rust area is the lower window frame rails. These are a
chrome channel that wraps around the bottom of the (door) window glass, and
these should be replaced. I simply haven't gotten to these items as of
today. Per the photos, the frame and underside are solid, having been
extensively cleaned, and undercoated. In terms of being street legal in states
other than Florida, be advised
this car does NOT have windshield wipers, does not have a horn, and it has one
small rock chip in the windshield.
I have the car registered here in Florida,
and drive it on the street to a show occasionally. Total mileage since I
acquired the car is less that 500 miles. This car has had much of the
restorative work performed by the well known performance tech facility Chassis
Engineering of Riviera Beach Florida. Final tuning and other mechanical
detail work was performed by the Performance Center of Jupiter, Florida, also a
well known racing resource. I have receipts and paperwork for all the
work and parts. I have copies of the 1981 Super Chevy magazine it appears
in, and about 2 dozen photos of the car in its early racing days. This car is
pretty unique as a well documented ex drag car/rat rod. The temperature
maintains itself in the 170 to 190 degree range very well on the road, and with
limited stop and go in town driving. I have never seen the temp above 195
degrees. I have not raced the car, but have burned out a few times.
The ALL NEW
components are:
New Griffin aluminum radiator, with stainless coolant overflow tube.
New Duplex electric cooling fans for the radiator
New Single wire alternator

cylinder. Car stops perfectly, with no pull or other problem

I am looking to acquire, from somewhere in the southeastern US, a first
generation 4 speed Mustang fastback, or a 2003 Mustang Cobra, or a first or second generation Camaro.
